Task 15 - File Compression and File Formats

A.M.D.G.

As the previous task showed, high-resolution colour graphics can take up a large amount of memory. With one A4 page taking over 20 megabytes of disc space, there has to be some way of making the files smaller. One way of doing this is to compress the data. The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) invented the most common still image compression format. JPEG file compression reduces the file size by about eighty percent. There will be a little loss of picture quality, but the storage reduction makes it worth it.

Using the Internet for reference, copy and complete the following table of different graphics file formats:

File Format

BMP

GIF

TIFF

JPEG

PNG
