Module 3.5
Task 2 - Automated Systems in Industry

A.M.D.G.

Automated systems have revolutionised the manufacturing and production industries. There are a great variety of automated systems used by industry. In general, an automated system is a piece of machinery controlled by a computer or microprocessor, to carry out a task without human assistance. The system is controlled through some type of program.

These systems are used in industry because:

  • They speed up the process of manufacture;
  • They enable tasks to be performed in hazardous environments;
  • They can perform, without breaks, tasks which humans would find boring or repetitive;
  • They are more efficient than humans;
  • They reduce costs over time;
  • They are more accurate than humans.

In addition automated systems are more adaptable or flexible than other machinery, they can easily be reprogrammed to carry out a different task.

Answer the following questions in your jotter.
