Module 2.4
Introduction

A.M.D.G.

What happens when you type a URL or web address into the address bar in Internet Explorer and press Return?

The web page you wish to view is stored on a web server, a specialised computer that is continually connected to the Internet and can deal with many thousands of requests for web pages at the same time. The web server then sends the HTML codes to your machine and Internet Explorer displays the page on your screen.

So how can you make your web pages accessible to anyone, anywhere in the world? You must be able to store your own web pages on a dedicated web server. You can obtain a unique web address and upload your files to this address. You may choose to pay for a personalised address, e.g. www.staloysius.org, or obtain an account from a company that offers free web space.
