After entering your user name and password you will see the Windows
Desktop appear.

Windows
is a special type of program called an operating system.
It starts as soon as you switch on the machine and allows you to do
useful work on your computer.
Windows is an example
of a graphical user interface (GUI) because it uses
pictures (or graphics) to represent parts of the computer. A GUI is
sometimes also known as a WIMP system. WIMP stands for:
Windows - Double click on My Computer and the box
that appears is called a window. Windows displays your work and can
be resized and moved around the screen.
Icons
- Icons are small pictures on the screen that represent something.
For example, the Recycle Bin is represented by a small picture of
a bin.
Menus
- Menus are lists of commands, options or instructions that you can
choose to use with the computer.
Pointer
- The pointer is the small cursor on the screen controlled by the
mouse. You can click, double click, right click or click and drag
with the mouse to carry out different operations.
Answer the following
questions in your jotter.

purpose of the Task Bar?

What is the purpose of the Recycle Bin
- Move
the mouse to Programs.

5. List and describe
three other programs that you have used before.
